'canoe and paddles'... Bermagui's cultural past has a story to tell.

THE BEACH HOUSE as it was originally known... 1920's.
'Bermagui' is a name derived from the Dyirringanj word, permageua, possibly meaning 'canoe with paddles'.The Bermagui area is home to the Yuin Aboriginal people. Bermagui township was settled in the 1830s and Bermagui Bay Beach House was one of the first buildings in the town, dedicated as accommodation for travellers (pictured in the centre of this stunning aerial photo shot in 1937).
BERMAGUI PORT:The port at Bermagui (pictured below) was established in the 1830s and Bermagui quickly developed into a fishing port. Today the harbor is one of the best access locations for big game fishermen and surrounded by world class natural wonderland of beaches, lakes and forests.

The building was renovated with arches at the front and side and the verandah enclosed on the top level... 1940-1950.
More about Bermagui...
Dad first flew over Bermagui whilst serving as a pilot with the RAAF during World War II. He was so impressed by its beauty from the air, he vowed to return if he survived the war. He did survive and spent many happy years at Bermagui.
Bermagui Bay Beach Houses have continued to provide wonderful holiday accommodation for others to enjoy Bermagui's delights. There really is nowhere else like Bermagui!
The iconic Horseshoe Bay is the ideal spot for a safe swim or snorkel, while Beare's Beach offers a lovely walk along a typical surf beach. The Blue Pool offers a natural swimming pool.
The location off the highway makes Bermagui a true getaway. Bermagui has a north facing bay, a pristine river and a picturesque port that provides access to deep water and big game fishing. In 1936 American author and game fisherman Zane Grey landed a 42kg yellow-fin tuna off Bermagui. It immediately placed Bermagui on the world map as a fishing mecca. Bermagui attracts fishermen and their big boats from South Australia, Victoria and NSW in search of Marlin, Kingfish and Tuna.
South of Bermagui and only five minutes by car, is the surf at Cuttagee Beach and just a few kilometres north of Bermagui is Wallaga Lake, a popular estuary fishing location. You can also fish at the other great rivers at Narooma and Tathra.
All in all, Bermagui is the ultimate fishing and watersports location on the beautiful Sapphire Coast.

Large salmon and kingfish were often the catch of the day. Mum holds a huge tuna on the dock (below).
